Clean water and basic sanitary services are essential to assure good public health in a community; deficiencies in any of these systems are easily identified in the affected people. In the rural community of El Ciruelar in Sopetran, located in the western part of Antioquia, Colombia, through the Local Committee, people were fully aware of their need to improve management and use of a local aqueduct system, in order to provide clean water to the community. This is a very poor community and requires environmental education and the design of an aqueduct that contribute to a better management and administration of the water resources, by the community itself, and also to build an aqueduct system that avoids losses, animal contamination to the water, and moreover, seeking also the firm compromise from the local administration for the maintenance of the aqueduct.
The main purpose of the environmental education workshops is to contribute to the conservation of the natural resources, through the consolidation of processes of management and preservation of the hydrological resource, which will help to minimize the environmental impacts by the improvement of the quality of the environment and life conditions of the people in the community.
