Population Project, Health Awa

$11,750

This project is divided into four parts and focuses on fighting population growth, health awareness for women, maternal and child healthcare, and nutrition education to help women to cook a cheap balanced diet to their families. The project is as follows:

(1) Population Project: The average size of families in Ezbet Sekina is 8 people with a monthly income less than $18. We plan to assign a physician to give 24 sessions each session will have an average attendance of 80 women. The sessions will include audio visual aids and will distribute birth control pills at the end of each session.

(2) Maternal and Child Health: 12 sessions, each session will have an average attendance of 30 mothers. The session will teach mothers maternal and child healthcare, such as how to give a baby a bath, vaccines, and the importance of breast feeding. Baby solid food would be distributed on mothers after completing the session to attract attendance.

(3) Women's' Healthcare: Each week 10 women (average age 45-60) will be clinically examined and will do a mammogram. This will run for 52 weeks and will serve 520 women of Ezbet Sekina.

(4) Nutrition Education: Anemia and malnutrition in Egypt is on the rise, children faint in schools because of that cause. We plan to offer the women of Ezbet Sekina "Nutrition Education" sessions and teach them how to cook a cheap balanced diet to feed their children and family and help raise healthy children. We will offer 20 sessions, each session will teach approximately 30 women.

Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak termed overpopulation as a "major challenge and fundamental obstacle" to development. With the total population of about 78 million at present, Egypt could have 160 million people by 2050 if nothing is done. A baby is born on average every 23 seconds in Egypt, the Arab world's most populous nation. The Rotary Club of Alexandria Cosmopolitan plans to go along with the theme of "two children per family -- a chance for a better life", and focus on the importance of achieving balance between population and resources. Hence, they have chosen the squatter area of Ezbet Sekina, which is a low socioeconomic district in Eastern Alexandria. The squatter areas around Alexandria including Ezbet Sekina are inhabited by a population of 2 million living in very densely populated area. The average size of a family is 8 people with an average monthly income of less than $18. The women and children of the district have very little access to medical care and tend to visit doctors or hospitals only when medical complaints have been totally progressed.

Members of the Rotary Club of Alexandria Cosmopolitan will monitor implementation of this project. Professional members of our Club will be responsible for organizing and participating in this project together with professional staff from "The Suzanne Mubarak Regional Center for Women's Health & Development". We are in good terms with the village people of Sekina and their mayor and have been working closely with them for the last ten years. Members will visit the site to monitor project as necessary. Members of Cosmpolitan will organize a project completion ceremony to publicize Rotary's contribution. Regular contact will be maintained with the partnering Rotary club to update them of progress, including photos and testimonials from the beneficiaries.
