Cataract Surgeries w/ IOL
$18,000
The Philippines is home to close to 500,000 people blind because of cataract. Only a small fraction is operated on every year because of the expense and the number of the blind increases for each passing year.
The project aims to operate on cataract patients through a procedure that will entail implantation of an intraocular lens (IOL) in the eye. The patients considered for this project are patients who will otherwise be employable save for their blindness, i.e., people who are productive and shall be able to contribute to the community substantially via their skills. Most of these patients have become a burden to their families and unable to support them financially.
Currently, there are several hundred patients that have already been screened and just waiting to be operated upon. Volunteer ophthalmologists have already committed to the project. |
