 Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs) are among the most common bacterial infections encountered by primary care pgysicians. A minority of UTIs in children progress to renal scarring, hypertension and renal insufficiency. UTI is prevalent in young children without a definite source of fever. Specific clinical signs and symptoms of UTI are uncommon, and the presence of another potential source of fever such as upper respiratory infection or otitis media is not reliable in excluding UTI. A high number of renal problems are seen in school children. Survey in the Philippines by National Kidney Institute show 20% of young children in public schools have UTI. To determine the prevalence of UTI among Grade 1 (one) public school students in Caloocan City using the dipstick method. To treat children who were identified to be positive for urinary tract infection then to re-evaluate children who were treated for the resolution of the infection. Caloocan City has 60 public elementary schools with a total enrollment of 29,662 for the Grade 1 level. All of these children will be screened. Licensed Medical Technologists will perform the procedure. Parents of identified children with urinary tract infection will be notified for the treatment instructions. Medications for the whole course of treatment will be provided free, through the grant of The Rotary Foundation, Sampaguita Grace Park as the Primary Club. Treatment for the infection is seven days for 1 week. |
