Projects consist of dental, medical and water quality improvement in villages of El Hato and Vuelta Grande, Guatemala. Each village has a population of approximately 1200 residents mostly living at a subsistence level and primarily working in the agricultural field raising flowers and a few vegetables.
Dental needs addressed by the project include: extractions, restorative work (fillings), possible occasional root canals, teeth cleanings and general dental hygiene education. The dental team will be led by a Rotarian dentist who is a member of the Newberg Rotary Club accompanied by dental hygenicists, translators and other Rotarians competent in the set up and operation of the dental units, sterilization of dental tools and use of x-ray equipment.
Medical project will consist of daily clinics and primarily deal with pulmonary and cardio-related illnesses most common in the villages as well as illnesses related to dysentery and other sickness related to poor nutrition and lack of clean potable water. The medical personnel are led by a Rotarian physician, Rotarian surgeon, physical therapist, nurses, translators and a Rotarian who owns and operates an urgent care facility in Newberg, Oregon. Minor health problems will be handled on the spot and more serious problems will be referred to an Antigua Rotary physician.
The water project will concentrate on UV water sterilization and decontamination. The project leader is a Rotarian who is an environmental scientist who, in conjunction with a volunteer hydrologist and systems engineer who is a member of the Antigua, Guatemala Rotary Club will install a UV sterilizer and necessary components so that 40 to 60 families will have direct access to potable drinking water.
The project will commence during the latter part of February, 2009 and be completed no later than March 21,2009 |
