Farmer Training & Microcredit

$15,500

Provide training and initial working capital for 15 groups of 4 students (each a child of poor farmers) to allow transition from single crop, subsistence rice farming to multi-culture farming (rice, fruit, poultry, goats, rabbits, fish, etc.) using high-yield organic farming techniques. A local partner will provide simple housing and 0.25 acre of land for each student. Previous pilot projects have shown that a farmer and his family can live self-sufficiently from such a parcel of land, increase income from such a parcel by 600% over a 2 year period, and provide an opportunity to increase their productive assets to emerge from the cycle of poverty. Loans to buy seeds and animals for the initial groups will be paid back to create a revolving fund to assist and train other groups of students.

Annual Progress Report was submitted to TRF on September 30, 2010.

<2-Dec-11> by Rey Whetten
This project was started as a microcredit project. Things were going fine with about 60 students, when a nearby volcano - Mount Merapi erupted, depositing feet of ash over the farm land and caving in roofs. The land cannot be used for farming for several years. TRF is considering changing the grant back from a microcredit grant to a regular matching grant, with suggested uses for the remainder of the funds.

<5-Dec-11> by Bob Fuchs
The Annual Progress Report was submitted to The Rotary Foundation on 10/22/2011 by Soertiningsih Hilman, along with a request to change the Matching Grant from a revolving fund matching grant to a straightforward grant due to the unexpected and exceptional difficulties beyond the control of the Rotary Club of Yogyakarta due to pestilence and a volcanic eruption. TRF's Steve Townsend acknowledged receipt of the report and request on 11/18/2011. All Rotary parties are awaiting further word from TRF.

<22-Jul-12> by Bob Fuchs
On January 24, 2012, TRF's project coordinator requested further clarification of several items regarding the replacement project for this matching grant. Due to the turmoil following the natural disasters which precipitated the need to change the original revolving fund matching grant to a regular matching grant and the ill health of the primary sponsors, the clarification has not yet been sent to TRF. The sponsors have identified a training program which would attempt to fulfill the objectives of the original matching grant, although on a smaller scale. The remaining approximately $5,300 USD of the original grant will be used to provide farmer training for a class of approximately 20 students and hopefully this will be completed by March-April 2013. I will work to assist the sponsors of RC Yogyakarta to clarify the issues raised by TRF, and hopefully the approval for the replacement project will be obtained soon.
