“You stop when you want to stop. You are afraid out there but hunger is stronger than fear. Said by a Former 18 year old prostitute.

The focus of this project is the young girls and boys that are under-educated and are forced into prostitution or selling drugs because they can't get a good paying job.

Grant funds will be used to create a computer learning center where English and computer skills are taught. Initially we will be teaching English, Word, Excel and Windows.

The International partner is the La Jolla Golden Triangle Rotary Club and the Host Club is the San Pedro Curridabat Rotary Club located in a section of San Jose, Costa Rica that has very low income.

A technical high school in the area has donated space for the project. Foundation Curridabat will run the center and provide teachers. The teachers are paid for by the Foundation Curridabat. Once we raise the funds to purchase computers, desks, chairs, software, training, the computer file server and set up we will hand it over to the technical high school and Foundation Curridabat to operate.

Status and Progress Information

Completed

This project is completed. Project listed for the 2009-10 Rotary Year.

The Matching Grant application number from TRF is #70779.

The TRF Staff in charge of this grant is Diane Lopez (Diane.Lopez@rotary.org).

We are looking for a Club or individual that can donate money to this project. We have already raised $16,000 and we need another $12,000. With Rotary International's Matching Grant program if we get $8,000 Rotary International will match it with the other $4,000.

These kids need this project. Costa Rica has been called the "Pedophile’s Disneyland". We'd like to make a dent on this industry and give these children a chance.

Informal word received that TRF is out of matching funds and that this grant will not receive a match. This application was delayed to due some incomplete paperwork and a past due grant report. Please consider refinancing this project without the TRF match.

<16-Sep-09> by Susan Thorning
Although no TRF matching funds are available to fund your grant, you may proceed with this grant by completing a financing form stating the cash and DDF contributions from the clubs and district(s), along with the required authorizations needed, to fund the project.

I called Diane E. López (847-424-5206) at RI this morning and she said she has our Grant to go over one more time before she sends it in for approval. She went over it once already and said everything looked in order. She said within the next two days she'll send it in for final approval and will e-mail us when that happens.

<23-Nov-09> by Susan Thorning
Your grant can not be approved until you submit supplier information with copies of pro-forma invoices for the items that will be purchased for the project. This would specifically include the computers and furniture and other iteminzed items.

<2-Feb-10> by Ron Kohl
Per your request, the update follows: This Matching Grant is still going through the approval process. The Club in San Pedro did complete their old Matching Grant reporting but RI says they have not recieved it yet. Also the proforma invoices that the San Pedro Rotary Club submitted did not match the budget, so they are adjusting them for re-submittal.

<5-Feb-10> by Ron Kohl
Esteban said his Rotary Club of San Pedro Curridabat will put in an extra $1,500 to help us match the new cost. The financing page has been updated.

<6-Feb-10> by Susan Thorning
