Eyesight for 820 people

$20,500

$25.00 will restore the eyesight of a person and return them to being a productive member of society. In 1916 Paul Harris stated:” Rotary will continue to be charitable, but it can do more than that; let it remove the cause of that which makes charity necessary.” Restoring ones eyesight will do just that. D.K. Lee asks us to reduce child mortality. We will restore the eyesight of children and adults and these adults will be able to care for their families.

Pakistan has a Per Capita Income of US $ 77 per month, 2/3rd of Pakistani population lives around the poverty line; the bulk of their income is spent on food. There are 1.7 Million blind people and another 170,000 become blind every year. 80% of blindness is curable. 60% is due to cataract which can be cured by simple operation costing only US$ 25. Another 16.5 million people have impaired vision, 6.6 million due to cataract. WHO classifies Eye Treatment as among the 10 most cost effective treatments. Due to limited availability of healthcare facilities and the high poverty levels, LRBT Trust provides appropriate state-of-art services free of cost with the help of donors like Rotary Clubs.

LRBT was established in 1984 the prevalence of blindness was 1.8% of the population. Since the inception of LRBT, blindness has declined by almost 50%. LRBT has been a major contributor in making this happen. This work has been recognized at National and International levels. A huge amount of work still needs to be done with over 17 million people suffering from blindness & impaired vision. LRBT provides free eye care through 2 Tertiary eye hospitals, 13 Secondary eye hospitals and 36 Primary/Outreach eye clinics in all four Provinces of Pakistan, covering both urban & rural areas. Mr. Frank Devlyn, Past R I President visited the LRBT Hospital at Korangi, Pakistan and highly commended their work.

This project entails restoring eyesight of 820 poor and needy person at a cost of US$ 20,500 (US $25 per cataract surgery inclusive of IOL). The project will be completed within 10-12 months of formal go ahead.
