   India - Bhatkal

Microcredit

$29,600

This project is a project of Mobilizing Rotary for Microcredit

The project we have identified is located in the town of Shirali. Ten years ago, the tiny hamlets in Shirali in Uttara Kannada district of Karnataka, were like any of the poorer villages you find throughout India. There was no high school, no hospital, and not much hope for the people who subsisted there. Many men were lost to alcohol. Women had few means to provide for their families. The best and bravest of the young fled to the cities.

A renowned NGO called BAIF Institute for Rural Development is working on a holistic community development programme which includes microcredit financing. BAIF has a solid background in microcredit finance and has all the processes in place for assessment of loan requirement, deployment and recovery of funds, formation of Self Help Groups, and training programmes for the women.

Technical review underway. Anticipated report next week. This standard review of microcredit grants is what has been causing the delay on your grant.

<13-May-10> by Susan Thorning
We have received an Technical Reviewer's report of your Revolving Loan Grant # 71746. Here are the suggestions that were found in the report:

1) Individual loans (Rs. 25000) are too high and the borrower might not be able to repay on time.
2) Groups of 20 are too large which will make handling loans and repayment matters more complicated.
3) Role of Shivali Trust is not clear.
4) Information on how the fees will be collected and used was not provided.
5) Confirmation is needed that Rotarians will provide sufficient financial oversight and attend group meetings regularly alongwith cooperating organization.
6) Confirmation is needed that Rotarians will keep a record of how funds and interest earned will be maintained.
7) Adequate training must be provided prior to giving loans to ensure that repayments are made on time so that group members are not taking on responsibility of repaying the defaulters loan.
8) Loan amounts must be reduced and loan duration restricted to 12 months instead of 24 months.

<28-May-10> by Susan Thorning
Answers to all of the technical questions have been submitted.

<28-May-10> by Susan Thorning
