Sanitation and Water

$23,255

Refilwe is a non-profit in South Africa dedicated to serving the poorest of the poor, with multiple interrelated programs. Their focus is on offering basic sustenance, medical care, skills development and child care.

Refilwe provides homes for AIDS orphans; outreach to AIDS afflicted in the nearby informal settlement with health care, social care and daily meals; a community clinic that provides AIDS and TB care as well as primary care in emergencies; skills training for the unemployable; daycare for small children while parents work, which also employs workers for the settlement; food gardening, which trains locals to grow food for their own families, and provides income to the gardeners; and a high school recently instituted to teach the children who live in the informal settlement.

The Refilwe community centre building was opened in February 2008. Local people were taught brick making, and did substantial work in the actual building. The centre is used for education for the school children as well as the skills development programs. It is also used for community education and meetings.

In order to enhance the subsistence garden size and output, and the number of people trained and fed, a steady supply of water is mandatory. By installing guttering, downpipes and water tanks on the community center building, a much larger and more dependable source of water will be created. And to make the community center more usable and to expand the job training projects, a toilet block is needed. This project will address those needs.

Status and Progress Information

Completed

This project is completed. Project listed for the 2009-10 Rotary Year.

The Matching Grant application number from TRF is #69838.

The TRF Staff in charge of this grant is Alexandra Buerkle (Alexandra.Buerkle@rotary.org).

This grant has a status of "pending approval." Our District told me: "Water and toilet block in SA is a matching grant that has been "cleared" by TRF staff and is waiting for trustees approval after July 1. For purposes of our analysis we are considering this project a done deal" They explained that it was okayed by RI staff, and it is now awaiting approval by the board after July 1. This means no additional signatures are needed, and we just wait for them to sign it off. I will let you all know as soon as we hear anything more.

This grant has a status of "pending approval." My district, 5340, has told me: "Water and toilet block in SA is a matching grant that has been "cleared" by TRF staff and is waiting for trustees approval after July 1. For purposes of our analysis we are considering this project a done deal" They explained that it was okayed by RI staff, and it is now awaiting approval by the board after July 1. Since it was accepted as a current year project, no resubmission or additional signatures are needed. With luck, the next word we get will be final approval. I will let you know as soon as I hear anything.
