   South Africa - Port Elizabeth

Missionvale Hunger

$50,000

Missionvale is a shanty town in the outskirts of Port Elizabeth South Africa. Missionvale Care Centre was started in 1988 by Sister Ethel Normoyle in a period when Apartheid was still quite alive. Over the past 20 years, Sr. Ethel has made significant strides for the people of Missionvale. She has cared, clothed, fed, schooled, and loved thousands and thousands of children and mothers. With a population of 120,000, 80% are unemployed and over 75% are infected or affected by HIV/Aids. There is over 7,500 children and the care center has been able to reach out to approximately 700 of them so far. Malnutrition is the single biggest problem facing the people of Missionvale. Our project will help provide bread, soup, soya mix or food parcels. Due to the unsanitary conditions and rampant challenges of hepititas and HIV, approximately 20% of this grant will be used to purchase soap to prevent spreading disease. The benefits to the community are significant—disease prevention and food for the thousands of children, women and men affected by the abject poverty and malnutrition through no fault of their own.

The TRF Matching Grants funds have been fully expended. However, you may proceed without TRF funding by revising your budget or providing additional funds. Please adjust your project budget and financing using the following the Rotary exchange rate: example: $1 USD = 7.8 ZAR (August/2009).
Also note that your request cannot be processed until an acceptable progress or final report is received from the International club for MG 66411 which was due by 15-Sept-09.
Your project has been changed back to fully funded status in order to provide access to the online application for budget revisions.
