   Ecuador - Riobamba

Extended Day School Program

$15,500

In the high Andes at the foot of the tallest volcano in Ecuador, Chimborazo, lies the city of Riobamba with a high percentage of indigenous inhabitants. This is a community of impoverished people where both parents must work to make a living for their children. After school is out for the day, there is a long period of time before parents return home and children are alone unsupervised. The intent of this project is to establish a Social, nutritional, educational, and recreational program under the supervision of qualified staff to aid the further development of these children in a safe environment. To this end, there is a need to purchase equipment and furniture to enhance the learning, physical development of these children. This project will allow the children to have a daily lunch, to have people that help them with their homework and also a place to have recreational activities in the afternoons. The beneficiaries are 200 school children and teenagers who live in extreme poverty. The community center is being provided by the city but the building needs to be refurbished to include classrooms, furniture, a kitchen, a multipurpose room for dining and recreational and educational activities.
