   Honduras - Water Filters

Potable Water for Honduras

$23,210

Most of the world’s peoples live “on the edge.” This is true of the villagers of the Moskito Coast in the jungles of Honduras and Nicaragua, where there is no power, windows, sanitation, transportation (other than by horse, dug out canoe or walking), only minimal medical and dental care, and most importantly, no clean, potable water. We, the Rancho San Diego / Spring Valley Rotary Club, in conjunction with other clubs in District 5340 (San Diego County), and a host club in Tocoa, Honduras are intent on changing that for eventually some 22,000 beautiful people spread throughout the small villages of “La Moskitia.” We are working with Rescue Task Force as our Cooperating Organization, a local NGO with excellent connections and credibility in the region. Our preliminary efforts in one village have reduced the incidence of diarrhea by over 90%. With an improved, technologically-appropriate filter “kit” – one for each village family – we plan to improve on even these excellent, initial results. As of May, 2009, 85 additional filters (modified, sturdier version) have been distributed to another 4 villages.

This grant will enable another 700 filters to be distributed to yet another 23 villages, serving approximately 3800 people.

Status and Progress Information

Completed

This project is completed. Project listed for the 2009-10 Rotary Year.

The Matching Grant application number from TRF is #71283.

The TRF Staff in charge of this grant is Mireya Morales (Mireya.Morales@rotary.org).

This is a very worthy project with excellent prospects for success as a result of the acceptance and reputation of our Cooperating Organization, Rescue Task Force, and our positive initial testing. We would welcome and greatly appreciate your assistance, as more money enables us to distribute more filters to more villages.

Rotarians Dan Conaway (Rancho San Diego / Spring Valley Rotary Club) and District 5340 Water Resources coordinator (Bill Stumbaugh), along with Gary Becks and volunteers from Rescue Task Force (our Cooperating Organization) will be traveling to Honduras, where they will be joining Rotarians from host Tocoa Rotary Club, Tocao, Honduras for delivery of 100 filter units to 3 "test" villages from 5/8/09 through 5/18/09. Based on the results and findings on the trip, we will be firming up the budget and preparing the application for submittal to TRF on or before July 1, 2009. We're excited.

The La Jolla New Generations Rotary Club has embraced this project and will contribute finacially, joining the Rancho San Diego / Spring Valley Rotary Club as the International Partners.

<28-May-09> by C. Dan Conaway
Because of reduced RF funding for 2009-2010 and accelerated submission dates for applications, we have scaled back the project from 2000 filters to a more modest 500 filters, which will accomodate 17 additional villages (avg. 30 homes per village), these in addition to 4 villages already equipped with filters.

<11-May-10> by Dan Conaway
The team, consisting of Rotarians from Rancho San Diego/Spring Valley, La Jolla New Generations and
Tocoa Rotary Clubs, along with Coordinating Organization, Rescue Task Force personnel have in the last several days successfully completed the distribution of 700 water filters to the communities of the Moskito Coast, Honduras. The filter assemblies ("filtros") are point-of-use, one-per-residence (hut), easy-to-sue-and-clean units. The great majority of the expense was shipping, handling, storage and then distribution, but they are out in the villages now, and we are very happy. A follow up trip in approximately 6 to 9 months will insure that the filters are in beneficial use.
Heartfelt thanks to all 4 contributing clubs, District 5340 and The Rotary Foundation for all their assistance. We are proud and happy for all who participated.

Your progress report with $15,450 reported out of $23,210 received has been accepted. Your next report is due within 12 months or no longer than 2 months after the project is completed. With the final report, please be sure to include bank statements showing the receipt of funds from TRF. The bank statement submitted with this report only shows $15,450 of grant funds expended, whereas the report budget shows $21,637.70. With the final report the budget should match the bank statement exactly.

<16-Jan-11> by C. Dan Conaway
Almost 700 water filters were distributed to a number of villages in the Moskito Coast in May, 2010. A return trip to the villages to assess the effectiveness of the units was just completed and results were primarily excellent, with the exception of one village. More detailed report will follow.

<8-Mar-11> by Dan Conaway
Final Report is circulating in draft form awaiting signature of Rancho San Diego/Spring Valley Rotary Club President and forwarding to TRF for approval. $285.88 remains in project account, and we're now seeking TRF permission to apply this sum to replacement of filters broken in village of Warunta. Otherwise, other filters in this and other villages being used very successfully -- incidence of diarrhea and parasitic infection "Way Down."

<4-Oct-11> by Cdanconaway
Still working on some minor, final steps. Hopefully to be completed soon. Then the Closure Letter and we are done.
