The main purpose of the opthalmological project is to obtain an Operation Microscope to detect eye diseases and also use for surgical procedures. The grant site will be at Los Lojas Community School in an impoverished suburb of Guayaquil, Ecuador. Los Lojas School is in a community where there is a high incidence of cataracts both with children and adults. Guayaquil La Puntilla Rotary Club will serve as the Host Club and it has embraced the entire school and community to improve the quality of life such as health, nutrition, technical skills, and a sound moral education. La Puntilla Rotary has invested close to $50,000, with assistance of city officials, business enterprises, social agencies, and the Church, to build a Medical Center serving students, parents, and community.
This facility now provides renovated space for medical needs, a dental office, ample supplies for First Aid assistance, and workshops for teachers, staff, and parents on general health education and ensuing epidemics which may curtail the educational progress of the school children. Dedicated space is now available for the Eye Clinic. The integral part of the Eye Clinic is the eye surgical apparatus. The proposed project is to obtain this sophisticated operation microscope which will be airfreight from Asia. La Puntilla Rotary has a club member who is an opthalmologist
and will direct the work of the Clinic. Governor-Elect Luis Villacres is a member of La Puntilla Rotary. La Mesa Sunrise will be the International Partner and will work with Mission Valley Rotary, San Diego Downtown Breakfast Rotary, and Susanville Sunrise Rotary. The beneficiaries of this medical effort will benefit the children of Los Lojas Community School in diagnosing, correcting, and improving their vision and preventing eye diseases. The surrounding school community will also have access to the school facilities and medical attention. |
