   South Africa - uMlalazi

Water, Sanitation, Eyeglasses

$50,838

This project consists of two parts:

1. Water and Sanitation.

The uMlalazi community is a sprawling rural community populated by poor families. The school is the focal point of the uMlalazi community and has a learner population of around 700 learners attending classes from grade 3 to grade 7.

This project provides potable water and sanitation at the uMlalazi Primary School which will address the appalling sanitary conditions and lack of potable water at the school that has become a breeding ground for disease and a source of demoralization to teachers and learners alike.

2. Reading eyeglasses for adult literacy class learners.

A successful and long-standing literacy project targets disadvantaged women who learn reading, writing, and math offered in classes in schools, churches, and huts throughout KwaZulu-Natal. These literacy classes provide a springboard for teaching other skills, including sewing, knitting, and baking. Some of the women have difficulty clearly seeing the text material because of age-related vision issues. The purpose of this project is to provide and deliver 2500 reading eyeglasses to adult learners. Many of these learners are the "grannies" who provide care for the orphans of the AIDS epidemic in KwaZulu Natal. Literacy and job skills will allow them more opportunities to support themselves.
