Matero School Supplies

$14,752

Nearly half of Zambia's population is under 15 years old and very much below poverty line. According to UNAIDS/WHO estimates, 130,000 of these children are living with HIV or AIDS. Many of these children, due to economic status, abandonment by parents or death of family members have no access to food, housing and/or education. This project will provide simple and sustainable school supplies to encourage basic education to about 200 children in the area including the vulnerable children infected with HIV or AIDS. The grant includes school supplies such as chairs, tables, bench desks, blackboards, text books, basic computing and other school equipment that are needed to run the new elementary school in Matero, Lusaka, Zambia. The school is under construction and the capital expenses and initial school running expenses including payment to teachers are funded by Dr & Mrs. Heinz & Alice Hoenecke California Foundation. Dr. Heinz Hoenecke is a longtime Rotarian in this international sponsor Del Mar Solana Beach Sunrise Rotary Club in Dist 5340. The local Matero village community will be greatly benefited by this elementary school and the Matero School will be the intended beneficiary who will own and run the school. The length of the project will be about nine months from the date of receipt of grant funds.
