Potable Water for Schools

$32,430

The 20,000 residents of the remote communities in the mountains outside of Quito have little access to clean water (a recent survey estimated that only 12% of the families have access to potable water). The major source of water for drinking, cooking and washing is rivers and streams. Because of the lack of sewage treatment (often the sewers spew untreated sewage into these same rivers and streams), these sources are often quite polluted; as a result many (especially children) suffer greatly from water-borne illnesses.

This project installs a water purification system at four local schools, so that the students are able to drink and wash their hands with clean water. The students and staff will also benefit by the use of clean water for food preparation on site. In addition the clean water can and will be used by others in the community.

The project will directly affect 1,140 children and a total of 3,750 in the immediate area.

The installation of potable water in rural schools not only will improve the health of the children but also will improve the general well being of the community.

The project will take about 45 days to implement after receiving the funds.
