Nutrition/Organic Co-Op

$14,750

The Nutrition/Organic Co-Op project will be situated in an impoverished community of San Enrique near Guayaquil. There are approximately 500 persons in this sector. Project participants will be 12 single mothers with an average of three children in each family; they will receive basic training to grow food products and lessons in management to enhance their entrepreneural skills for food distribution. The intent of the project is to grow organic food with allocation of plots of land for each family with diversification of products for balanced healthy meals. A common kitchen will feed the immediate San Enrique community with high protein organic foods at a minimal cost at a central kitchen and extra food is to be sold to surrounding communities and restaurants; proceeds will be used to purchase necessary seeds and agricultural implements; in addition surplus monies will establish a fund for medical and educational needs. There is a concerted effort to create a "green" community and protect the environment, which is becoming a national conscious in Ecuador.
