   India - Dibrugarh

Medical Clinic

$23,500

This area of India is known as the "Tribal Regions." It is in the far North East corner of the panhandle of India. It is above Burma and below Tibet. It is approximately the size of the State of New York. It has a population of approximately 1 million people from 26 different tribes, speaking 26 different dialects. Education, vocational training and medical services are a luxury few know of.

In this remote part of the world, the most rudimentary medical help is a ten-day walk away. If villagers do make the trek, they will have to leave their fields and lose their crop. For them, it is their entire food source. Once they get there, they cannot afford to pay for the services. In this area, children easily die from infected bug bites. People die horrible deaths from untreated burns, as they cook over open fires.

This project will fund the purchase of an SUV for transporting volunteers from the Assam Medical College to these remote areas. It will also purchase sewing machines for vocational training and medicines in large quantity for a population of 55,000 people.

VIVEKANAND KENDRA ARUN JYOTI, ARUNACHAL PRADESH
– A REPORT of MEDICAL ACTIVITIES UNDER SWASTHYA SEVA MANCH IN UPPER SUBANSIRI DOSTRICT April 2010- March 2011 (medicines are sponsored by Rotary Club, Dibrugarh & USA
Vivekananda Kendra Arun Jyoti started Medical Activities in Upper Subansiri district from 2009. Initially we selected 9 villages to start our regular medical activities. The villages are Sippi, Soki, Menga, Maro, Mekdong, Lilydong, Gapen, Kodak and Tawarijo. We started doing medical camps there in every month during summer and in alternate months during winter.
Why did we select those villages? These villages are situated in strategic locations. The Upper Subansiri district is inhabitated by three main communities. The Ziro-Daporijo road is dominated by the Nyisi community, The Basar-Daporijo road is dominated by the Galong community and the Daporijo-Limeking road is dominated by the Tagin community. These nine villages are situated in these differently dominated areas. Many small hamlets and villages are nearby to these villages. The Subansiri district is horizontally divided by the mighty Subansiri river. From Daporijo, the Disrtict H.Q. there in only one motor able road up to China border constructed and maintained by BRTF. The other side of the river is linked by some hanging bridges. And some villages are very small, comprising of four, five houses. So the above mentioned villages are centre points, where basic infrastructures are there, like school or community halls to organize medical Camps. In a camp an average of 75-80 persons comes for check-up and after examination medicines are distributed accordingly.
Along with regular medical activities we started to observe the factors, which affected the health of people. We found that lack of awareness is the main factor behind the illnesses. Like villagers pay very little attention towards cleanliness. All the children are ascaris infected. Topography is another factor. For example due to very humid weather the Mekdong-Lilydong area is Malaria prone. Due to high altitude and cold the areas near Kodak, we found many skin related diseases. Due to less intake of water we found gastritis in all the areas. Food habits, scarcity of clean drinking water are some of the other factors. For example due to less intake of dark green leaves maximum population of Sippi, Soki, Maro have vision problems. Pregnant women of the villages are not aware about ANC (Ante Natal Check-up) and institutional deliveries. That’s why Child Mortality Rate is high and number of Immunized child is less.
After observing all these factors, we decided to train some youths and in April 2010 we had a training programme at VKV, Kuporijo. 9 brothers and sisters from various villages attended the camp and got the basic knowledge about health. Now they are accompanying our Medical team to the villages and interact with the villagers on various health issues. The Govt. Doctors, Health Assistants and ASHA’s are also coming forward to make a positive change.
In last one year (April 2010-July 2011) we conducted 47 medical camps there and 3500 patients were treated. The number of patients is decreasing day by day, which is a positive sign. Along with camp we conducted health awareness meetings, where Gaon Buras, Panchayat leaders, teachers, youth leaders took part. On 2nd Oct.2010, we organized one massive cleanliness drive in Daporijo Township, which was very much appreciated by the District Administration.
The most encouraging fact is that there is not a single malaria death in Mekdong-Lilydong areas this year. All the pregnant women of Maro have done their ANC and getting IFA supplements regularly. Personal hygiene and awareness increased in all the areas we covered and this positive change is slowly but surely reaching the other areas also.
Along with Medical Activity, Vivekananda Kendra gives vocational training to womenfolk there. During the period, 7 girls took residential training. Some of them are doing production at their houses and 3 worked in the centre itself. Total sale of their products was ` 15055/-.
Rotary Club of Dibrugarh R.I. District 3240 & Rotary Club of Vista, Callifornia USA. R.I. District 5340 under Matching Grant No.71384 has supported these activities in Upper Subansiri District of Arunachal Pradesh. They donated three of the tailoring machines, a grinder, the medicines required for the Health camps and a Tata Mobile 207 vehicle.
