Dharamshala is a town in a rural area of Northern India on the foothills of the Hymalaya. There are a lot of Tibetan refugees around because Dharamshala is the residence of the Dalai Lama and the Tibetan government in exile.
In general in Dharamshala, computers are used everywhere (bookstores, cyber-cafes, all government offices, schools, travel agencies), and for a person who is looking for a job, it is very important to have some knowledge about computers to be able to get a better job and earn a higher salary.
Computer training fees are, on the average, about Rs.2500 per person/month-an impossible sum for a good portion of the local community. In one computer training center, students can attend for 900Rs/month, yet there are only four seats. Likewise, the next least expensive option is 1,400Rs/month, and they also have only four seats.
The Dharamshala Rotary Club wants to provide 5 computers to train people in the local community who cannot afford to get formal training in school, including Tibetan refugees. The equipment will be given to the Yashna Coaching Center, a local organization dedicated to teaching to the poor. A room is already set aside for the vocational center and the Rotary Club will pay all expenses for the room, including electricity. Local and international volunteers will provide the training.
This matching grant will provide 5 computers, with the necessary peripherals, and also tables, chairs, and a white board for instruction. See detailed budget in the document on the left. | |
