Neonatal Intensive Care Unit

$27,103

Neonatal or Newborn Intensive Care Unit (NICU) is a special baby care unit specializing in the care of ill or premature newborn infants. Many times babies are born prematurely with low birth weight (LBW), congenital anomalies; difficulties occur during their deliveries or babies show signs of a problem in the first few days of life. NICU would provide treatment for all such infant health complications.

One of the major causes of a high Infant Mortality Rate (IMR) is prematurely born babies with LBW or very LBW. 50% of infant causalities occur within the neo natal period. Neonatal mortality is the major contributor to high infant mortality rate. Over 400,000 newborns die annually within 24 hrs of their births. The IMR in India is 72 in every 1000 births.

NICU plays a critical role in reducing IMR in poor urban populations. Even in a metro city like Bangalore, INDIA, only few private hospitals have NICU and they are very expensive. Only the affluent few can afford treatment at the NICU. The proposed NICU will be setup at P D Hinduja Hospital, Bangalore. It will provide treatment at charges affordable by economically weaker sections of society.
