   Sri Lanka - Wadumunna

Renovate A Water Tank

$22,695

The GaladeniyaReservoir(Wewa), situated in between Panduwasnuwara and Chilaw, In the North Western Province of Sri Lanka covers an area of 8 acres. At the present, They try to cultivate at least 13 acres of surrounding land using water from this reservoir but due lack of water the crop gets dried out. 100 families are directly involved in this farming. The daily income per villager is less than USD 2 (two).

The Problems

There are 2 cultivating seasons a year, but due to insufficient water supplies, farmers cannot even cultivate during the first season. The reservoir cannot hold water in the rainy season. The tank basins are insufficient to retain enough water. There is no waterduring the dry season even for a cow to drink. The farmers cannot raise even a cow or a goat to have milk for the children. The farmers have to toil as day laborers to find some daily living. This income is insufficient for their livelihood. At the present, the farmers’ educational level is limited to primary level, coupled with basic literacy. However, the farmers’ children (100) are being educated. In order for the children to continue being educated, the farmers need a reasonable income from harvests, and need to cultivate both seasons.

It is clear that there is an urgent need for these tank basins to be renovated, in order that there are sufficient water supplies for a first and second cultivating season, which in turn would raise standards of living for this farming community. The main objective of the proposed project is to renovate this tank thereby enhance the income levels of the 100 families. We estimate that the project can be completed within 90 to 120 days.
