Water Filters in Schools

$15,000

Rural schools in the villages around the community of Pihuamo have water piped to them from their communities’ water systems. The water is not potable. According to the Secretary of Public Education, children in rural areas miss several days of school each year due to stomach and intestinal problems as a result of ingestion of unclean water.

Bacteria and parasites inhabit the open systems. Even if the water holding system is closed, the pipes that feed the taps and faucets are old and leaky. What may start out clean isn’t potable by the time it reaches the faucet.

This project will provide water purification systems. The self-contained purification systems will purify the water when it reaches the rural schools, and deliver potable water to the drinking fountains. An additional benefit of the system is that it also has a faucet under which larger containers can be filled so the children can take clean water home to their families each day to improve health and reduce water-borne diseases at home.

Once the project is funded, it will take about four months to fabricate and install the systems.
