The project is a medical mission to a remote area of Guatemala, and will be conducted in a similar fashion to last years mission to Playa Grande. Potential sites for this years mission include Nebaj, Barillas, Las Casas or Playa Grande.
Our upcoming mission is modeled upon the Playa Grande project, conducted in February, 2001. Helps International, a Non Governmental Organization (NGO), provided the infrastructure for physicians, surgeons, nurses and technicians from the US Navy Medical Center in San Diego to conduct the mission. This team spent 7 days in Playa Grande and evaluated and treated over 2000 patients with 150 surgeries performed. Sight was restored to many blinded by cataract. Reconstructive surgery was performed on children deformed by conditions such as cleft palate. Burn and trauma victims also received life changing surgical procedures. The Team also provided significant medical care to this rural population in need including treatment for various tropical diseases.
The team traveled to and from Playa Grande by bus because the air transport planned was aborted by weather. A clinic, hospital and barracks at a military base were utilized. Teams used 4 wheel drive vehicles in an outreach to nearby villages to screen and evaluate the needy population. The total effort involved some 75 personnel.
Funds will be used to provide equipment and supplies for this team with many well documented success stories. |
