A feeding program for 300 pupils of F. Benitez Elementary School Main & III (Brgy Sta Cruz & Brgy Singkamas, Makati City).
This program, "FEED A CHILD, BUILD A NATION" - A Rotary Food For Education Initiative, is a project of the Rotary Club of Makati North - District 3830 in its Community/Youth Service.
FEED A CHILD, BUILD A NATION can commence any time of the year but ideally should synchronize with the Philippine school calendar. Inasmuch as classes start in June, feeding can commence July and end March. Appraisals are to be done bi-monthly on the school level.
Method of Choosing Beneficiaries of Activities:
An estimated 40 percent of the Philippine population falls below the government's official poverty line. This is up from 37 percent in 2000. An estimated 36 percent of all children in the Philippines suffer from some type of nutritional deficiency.
This program will target:
A total of 300 pupils who falls under the category of "under nourish". Priority is given to these schools due to the high prevalence (at least 10% of total school enrollment) of malnutrition or nutritional deficiency diseases.
Activity Budgets:
We estimate that we can deliver a nutritious supplementary lunch. This covers the cost of ingredients only. Only minimal administrative expense will be borne by the program.36 continuous school feeding weeks will be the target for this school year commencing July 2010. All food preparation and serving will be on a volunteer basis. Feeding is undertaken during school days only at the school premises.
Activity Objectives:
The program is intended to create a viable, long-term, community based school feeding program that will serve as a model that can be replicated throughout the country. It features a supplementary nutritious lunch feeding program to 300 elementary school students in the public school of Barangay Sta Cruz & Barangay Singkamas, Makati City involving mostly volunteer to help minimize administrative cost.
Specific goals are:
• See the drop-out rate at the target schools/grades decline by 50%;
• See the absentee rate drop by 50% in the targeted school:
• See the incidence of protein energy malnutrition (PEM) among school children in the program decline by 80%;
• See the incidence of iron deficiency as indicated by median urinary iodine excretion (UIE) in the students in targeted school/classes;
• See F. Benitez Elementary School Main receiving assistance under this program graduate with self-sustaining program within five years;
• See increased parent/community involvement in providing nutrition to their children.
Note: Baseline data to measure these nutritional objectives against is available from DECS and NNC (National Nutrition Council). |
