The purpose of this grant is to purchase the molds and forms to make the blocks, beams, and tiles to allow impoverished families in Tijuana, B.C., Mexico to construct basic 11' x 22' dwellings under a program sponsored by Esperanza International. These are self-help projects wherein the home owners construct their own dwellings, often with help from volunteer organizations from the US. The housing program is self funded by repayment from the owners but the equipment is owned and controlled by Experanza.
Tijuana is plagued by shack type houses for a large segment of its population. There is no mortgage system. The self-help building program allows the community and volunteer groups to build affordable housing.
The Del Mar Rotary sponsored the founding of the Hipodromo Rotary. The two organizations have worked together successfully on a matching grant for dental equipment for the University Dental School in Tijuana. Esperanza International will report to the clubs on the successful completion of this project. |
