   Ghana - Bolgatanga

Clean Water

$12,575

To provide a clean and accessible source of water for the communities of Pulera, Kaare and Gozuore, located approximately 10 miles southeast of Bolgatanga, capital of the Upper East region of Ghana. Belonging to the Talensi cultural group, the inhabitants are mainly subsistence farmers growing millet, corn, groundnuts and other staples during the rainy season and storing the dried crop for the long day season, stretching from November to June. This dry spell sees little to no rain at all. The people depend on the water fetched from boreholes, hand-dug wells, ponds and dams. These sources are few and far between in the considered area. The main scope of this project is the drilling of a borehole and putting a water pump in place. This borehole will have a cement platform/foundation and a drainage system for any overspill. In addition, the project will also consist of dredging an existing dam and two ponds that have collected silt and run off over the years and thus have diminished in size. These sources, when dredged, would not only yield more water from the underground sources but also fill up to capacity during the rainy season that would stretch through the entire dry season. It would also create a water source for the cows, goats, sheep and donkeys and other livestock that the people depend upon for meat, labor and other animal products.

Per our project coordinator in Ghana, Linda Atwater, the pond dredging has been completed with the dozer, leaving a portion to be completed by the community and shovels where the dozer began to sink in mud. The local community will plant elephant grass on the banks to keep the erosion down.
The bore hole has been identified and the rig ordered from Tamale to begin drilling sometime the week of 4/16.
