   Ghana - Accra

Water Tanks

$24,400

This project was submitted at the West Africa Project Fair

Although the physically and mentally handicapped form quite a sizeable portion of the Ghanaian population they are denied most facilities. The society does not provide adequate facilities to cater for the needs of these deprived people.

The educational infrastructure in Ghana does not make any provisions for the disabled. This over 80% of the disabled have no access to formal education.

In this bid to assimilate the disabled children within the Kpando District into the formal education system, Mr. Gershon Kofi Tagboto started a school for the mentally handicapped in his own house in 1994. Over the years, the people of Abanu, a suburban village of Kpando, gave him land to build the school. With funding from the German NGO GTZ, a six-classroom block was constructed at Abanu.

The school building was commissioned on July 20, 2002, by the Kpando District Chief Executive.

The German NGO has also drilled a borehole to provide water for the school. The borehole however is only fitted with a hand pump. The Abanu village also has 2 boreholes fitted with hand pumps. These boreholes were drilled by DANIDA and handed over to the community. These hand pumps are very difficult to operate because one needs a lot of strength to swing the handle up and down. Thus these pumps are called "Abrewa nsa" which literally means "the old woman cannot fetch water".

Additionally, several accidents do occur while people fetch water. Both children and adults very often crush their fingers, while others have their jaw or part of their head or body hit the bouncing back metal handles of these pumps.

Also, because the water does not come out in a steady strem continuously, there are always long queues. The women and children take long hours to draw one bucket full of water.

There are also six other villages within a radius of six kilometers from Abanu viz. Gadza, Agudzi, Bame, Ando Kofe, Dzigbe, Dzewoe, which have been provided with boreholes and hand pumps. These also face the same problems of drawing water.

The school currently has a population of about 100 pupils. As the name of the school suggests, Community Inclusive Special School, it admits both the mentally handicapped and the non-handicapped children from the community. It has a staff of graduate special education teachers and German volunteers.

Abanu has a total population of about 3,500 people and the populations of the other villages range from about 2,000 to 4,000 people.

We are planning to provide and erect 8 overhead water tanks ($1,000 each), with 8 electric submersible water pumps ($3,000 each) to pump the water into the overhead tanks, provide pipes and accessories at $900 per borehole, and build concrete stands at $1,200 each.

This $24,400 project would provide the funding for 4 boreholes, and we will be looking at another project with the same budget for the other 4 boreholes.
