Project Profile

Rotary Club of Chandigarh Midtown

Text books for underprivileged school children

According to a survey conducted by us, the Union Territory of Chandigarh has 69 High Schools / Sr. Secondary Schools being run by the Government. Generally speaking the well-to-do families send their children to Private Schools whereas the low income and middle class families tend to send their children to Government administered schools because of the lower cost of education.

Our survey reveals that in almost every school there are on the average 7 – 8 children coming from families who can hardly afford their text books and school fees, especially in the higher classes like class IX, X, XI & XII.

Out of the 69 schools approximately 32 provide education up to class XII whereas the remaining 37 only up to class X.

Our project is to provide 8 sets of text books to class IX, X, XI and XII to each school which will serve the needs of the poorest 8 children. The text books will be let out to these students from the School Library at the beginning of every academic year and the students to whom the books are allotted will return the books to the Library at the end of the year so that the next batch of children can make use of the books in the next academic year and so on. Experience suggests that the text books can have effective life of 3 academic years.

Funding requirements:

Each set of text books of class IX and X will be approximately Rs.600/-

Whereas each set of class XI & XII will cost approximately Rs.600/-

Therefore cost of one set for all the 4 classes : Rs. 2,400.00

Cost of 8 sets : Rs.19,200.00

Outlay for 32 schools : Rs.6,14,400.00

Cost of text books for class IX & X : Rs. 1,200.00

Cost of 8 sets : Rs. 9,600.00

Outlay for 37 schools : Rs.3,55,200.00

Therefore total outlay : Rs.9,69,600.00

Say : US$22,000.00

The project seeks to touch the lives of approximately 5000 underprivileged children in our community.

The club is planning to raise approximately 1/3rd of the total outlay which comes out to approximately Rs.3,23,200.00 equivalent to US$7,350.00.

We are seeking partnership with an overseas club who will be willing to join hands with us in this literacy project by contributing an equivalent amount or a part of it.

A Matching Grant of 1/3rd of the total outlay will enable us to execute the project.
