   India - Bidadi Hobli

Bidadi Microcredit

$13,000

This project is a project of Mobilizing Rotary for Microcredit

To provide a revolving loan to an impoverished cluster of villages (Bidadi Hobli, Ramanagar Taluk) in the Indian province of Karnataka. The loan will be dispersed to Self Help Groups (SHG's) consisting of 15-25 members. The SHG's in turn will loan the amount to individual members depending on their specific needs to start a micro enterprise. Possible enterprises include: purchase of cows or sheep, purchase of irrigation pump set, purchase of seeds and pesticides for farming, purchase of tailoring machine, seed capital for starting a petty groceries/eateries shop. In turn, this not only helps the families to be self sufficient, but it also helps them to manage money responsibly, have better family relationships and most importantly, to provide an education for their children.

The loan amount will be returned in 15 months and then the same can be used again to provide loans to the same SHG or for a new one. The host club will be actively involved in managing the whole program which includes the following: identifying and selecting the SHG's eligible for loan, training the SHG's, disbursing the loan, monitoring the progress of the SHG's and loan recovery. Training the SHGs will be performed by a Non-Governmental Organization called MYRADA, who are already operating in the area for several years and have been very successful in training SHGs in other nearby rural areas. MYRADA will be hired for this specific activity of initial training of the SHGs. The Host Club Rotarians will be supervising and monitoring the progress of the SHGs, disbursement and collection of the revolving loans.
