   Zambia - Mansa

Maternal/Child Health Module

$12,400

Worldwide, more than 50 million women suffer from poor reproductive health and serious pregnancy-related illness and disability. Women in high-fertility countries in Sub-Saharan Africa have a 1-in-16 lifetime risk of dying from maternal causes compared with women in low-fertility countries in Europe (1-in-2,000 risk) and North America (1-in-3,500 risk). Zambia is a land-locked country in southern Africa with a population of 10 million, with more than 50% of the population under 15 years of age.

Mansa General Hospital, in a district that includes over one million people, established a Pediatric ICU for the first time in 2001 under the supervision of pediatrician and Mansa Rotary Club member, Dr. Jerome Sulubani. Dr. Sulubani, the only pediatrician at Mansa GH and one of only two pediatricians in the entire country, was qualified as a physician in Rome, Italy, and is a Congolese refugee. The hospital is the cornerstone of a wide reaching referral system that involves smaller hospitals and rural health centers, some over 200 km away. Mansa Hospital has 407 inpatient beds and emphasizes pediatric, neonatal and maternal care. This grant would provide an ultrasound machine for the hospital. This item will be shipped in collaboration with our partner, Direct Relief International.
