Water Borehole for School

$12,515

This project was submitted at the West Africa Project Fair

The city public water board is inefficient. For the past few years, it has not been able to provide water to the residents of the city. The public water pipes have not been brought to any of these schools. Most people have, therefore, had to sink their own borehole to provide potable water.

What we seek to do is to do water boreholes for the schools. The schools are all within the city limits of Aba and therefore have electricity. We therefore propose to sink boreholes with electric pumps as against boreholes with manually operated hand pump. The one with electric pump is more efficient and would require an overhead tank. With an overhead tank, water will always be available for the students. Power supply by the public power company is wrought with incessant outages, we will provide a power generating set to run the pump when there is no power.

The water table is pretty well established throughout the city and of public knowledge. It’s been established that you can get water at a depth of about 40meters(130feet), however, it is better to go deeper to 55meters(180feet) to get good clean water without any threat of running out or being polluted.

The borehole will be sited within the school premises. We will construct a small building 3.5m(11.5ft)x3.5m(11.5ft)x2.6m(8.5ft) high. The building will be made of reinforced concrete columns and slab with sandcrete blocks infill. The slab will carry a 2000liter(500gal) pvc water tank. The building will serve the dual purpose of being a stand for the water tank as well as housing the plumbing abd electrical installations. The electrical installations for switching the pump as well as other electrical installations will be located inside the building.

The taps will be placed on one of the walls of the buildings and can be controlled from inside the building. This building will have the Rotary Wheel boldly inscribed on it with the names of the sponsoring clubs also inscribed on the walls of the building.
