This project is completed. Project listed for the 2006-07 Rotary Year. The Matching Grant application number from TRF is #62589. The TRF Staff in charge of this grant is Peggy Tarr (peggy.tarr@rotary.org).
The project is ongoing and currently on its 103rd patient, up from 84 patients when this page was last updated.
While most pacemaker implantations continue to be done at the Phil. General Hospital in the City of Manila, a second implantation hospital center was established in Cebu City in the Visayan region of the Philippines. Patients from the Visayan Region as well as those from the Mindanao Region need not go to Manila anymore to receive treatment. Savings in transportation and travel time are the result.

The PacemakerBank continues to save precious lives with the pacemakers sent to it by Heartbeat International. Funds from the Pacemaker Assist Matching Grant Project are in turn used to pay for the cardiac catherization laboratory fee and other hospital expenses at the Philippine General Hospital. Thus far, approximately USD2,000 have been spent for the hospitalization expenses of ten (10) pacemaker patients. This amount is expected to accelerate as more pacemakers arrive from Heartbeat this month. The task of using Pacemakers as Peacemakers is performed mainly by RC Manila Bay Vice President and Pacemaker Bank Medical Director Rogelio Tangco M.D. and his team of medical practitioners at the Philippine General Hospital. For the 18 month period ending December 31, 2007, Dr. Tangco and his team have implanted 49 pacemakers and 8 ICDs to indigent patients.

The project continues and has now implanted 124 pacemakers, up from 106 pacemakers when we made the last update. There has been a slowdown in the pacemakers arriving from Heartbeat International as a result of economic difficulties besetting its donor suppliers. The work of the bank nonetheless stays meaningful with eighteen (18) precious lives saved during the last six months.

To date, 136 pacemakers and ICDs have been given to 136 indigent patients. Only 12 pacemakers and ICDs though were implanted since the start of the year. The Pacemaker Bank in fact has not received any new pacemakers from Heartbeat International since February. Heartbeat continued to deal with problems of supply and changes in the regulatory environment. Good news though recently came via a video message from Heartbeat Chairman Benedict Maniscalco, M.D., where he reported that Heartbeat recently received a substantial amount of devices from St. Jude Medical. To access this message please go to www.heartbeatsaveslives.com.
Though the quantity of indigent patients assisted is greatly reduced, the sincerity of channeling grant funds to deserving patients is not diminished in any way. Special thanks are given to the doctors, medical personnel and social workers of the Cardiac Catherization Laboratory of the Philippine General Hospital.

The Bank in December 2010 received ten (10) pacemakers and ICDs from Heartbeat International. These and the existing inventory were immediately implanted thus bringing the number patients treated to One Hundred Forty Nine (149) from One Hundred Thirty Six (136) in October 2010. Please see the uploaded pictures to see the pictures of the latest patients.
We have not received new devices from Heartbeat International as it seems that supply remains tight. Heartbeat has also reorganized and redirected its policies and as a consequence has asked the Pacemaker Bank to incorporate into Pintig Puso Pilipinas - Heartbeat of the Philippines. We are currently complying to this requirement of Heartbeat International. Grant funds will continue to be strictly dedicated to the hospitalization and implantation expenses of our patients. The USD5,000.00 annual fee to Heartbeat International has also been paid out of independently sourced funds.
<20-Dec-11> by Camilo P. Ramirez
The number of patients as of this day has reached 166 or an increase of 17 patients since June 2011. This was made possible with the delivery of 20 additional pacing devices from Heartbeat International. Please see the newly uploaded pictures of some of our beneficiaries.
Matching Grant funds are almost used up but should still be good for another 10 patients in 2012.
