   South Africa - Westville

Water, Sanitation, and Shelter

$15,838

PROJECT 1 The Jabulani Self Help Centre is a self supporting non government sponsored organisation that assists the poor and disadvantaged people of Marianhill and its surroundings through the development of skills, medical support, education of children and providing basic needs. The Centre is serviced by a Bore hole that supplies some of its water needs. This bore hole is not sleeved and its pump frequently gets silted up causing pressure and water failures. Valuable rain water is lost due to the lack of water storage tanks ands roof gutters. The water is used for cooking, washing and garden irrigation but lack of and impaired water supply forms a major barrier to the well being of the community.Money is required to clean out and sleeve this bore hole as well as to provide tanks and gutters. The sum of R54818.92 ($7509.44) has been quoted for this purpose. Westville Rotary Club have recently had the pump serviced, but work needs to be carried out on the Bore Hole to bring the water supply back to acceptable levels.

PROJECT 2 HEADWAY NATAL Item 1

HEADWAY NATAL serves people who have acquired brain damage as a result of accidents, strokes and other associated illnesses by attempting rehabilitation, counselling and fitness training both mentally and physically.Headway receives no Government funding and is reliant entirely on private donations. There are currently 31 patients but this number fluctuates.A heated swimming pool has been donated but a hoist is required at a cost of R11930.00.($1634.39) to enable the wheel chair patients to get into and out of the pool before and after swimming periods

PROJECT 2 item 2 Refurbishing of Toilet Block to fit shower to enable patients to shower prior to and after swimming and to reposition toilets to suit wheel chair patients. This will also require certain retiling.collective cost R17224.87 ($2359.57)

PROJECT 3 ST THOMAS CHILDREN'S HOME.

St Thomas' is a registered non Government organisation catering for 60 children aged 2 - 10 years who come from disadvantaged backgrounds and many of whom are HIV positive.Because of limited space they desperately require a shelter consisting of a rainproof awning and concrete floor to enable the school going children (6-10) to do their homework and extra mural activities. The cost of this work has been quoted at R30000.00 ($4109.58)

The host partner will keep the International partners completely informed of the progress of all three projects, complete with photographs and regular reports and return a complete set of accounts for each project.International partners are more than welcome to visit the sites at any time.

Kate Van Royen and Allan Isdale have been appointed to fulfill the conflict of interest concern.
