   Indonesia - Atambua

Water for Life

$15,988

Atambua is a city in West Timor, Indonesia, which received more than 60,000 refugees from neighboring country, East Timor in 2000 during that country's struggle for independence from Indonesia. This growing population and the many years of severe drought caused a severe lack of potable water supply in Atambua, where drinking water is taken directly from the nearest river, resulting in widespread health and sanitation related diseases. This project will build a water well in Desa Barene, Kec. Maluku Tengah, Kabupaten Belu, which will supply potable water to 4800 people who currently have to travel 2 kilometers to get water everyday.

Project was only started early April 2009 because of the rainy season that started in early October and lasted till April 2009, which hinders the work. All the materials and necessary field preparation were already completed. Further coordination with cooperating organization will be conducted for a more successful project.

There is problem with drilling. they have drilled 3 different times, they have heat the oil, gas and rock but no water. The search for new site is going on.

<22-Feb-10> by Al Laghab
Contractor have tried to dig for water 5 different times, he asked the help of the expert from Jakarta, who used high tech tolls to locate water. So far no success. They have reached oil, gas; hit the stone, but no water. The contractor has spent more than he was paid, in spite of this he offered to return the money back. We requested him to try one more time. It is truly hard to get water that is the very reasons we have choose this site.

This is the report from Indonisia from the contractor:
Respectfully, we hereby report that until today we have conducted drilling at 6 locations with average depth of 80 meters, however we did not find water until we drilled in the 7th location. We failed to find water at the previous 6 spots.
Today we are enlarging the well and we are trying to extract the water, and if we have no other problems, within a week we will be able to install a permanent pump, and we will build the cement reservoir. We estimate all will be finished in a month, and ready for officiating ceremony. We are planning to put the inscription: "Water well donated by Rotary Club International in cooperation with Worldharvest International USA"
This concudes our report.
