   South Africa - Cape Town

Literacy for All (UKFUNDA)

$54,000

Michael Gordon, our 2006-2007 Rotary Ambassadorial Scholar from Cape Town, South Africa initiated this project as a way to "Give Back" to Rotary for his experience studying abroad and a way to combat illiteracy in his country. South Africa has a 61 % literacy rate for children. For just $4.45 per child, we can supply children with all the books they need for three years, grades 1-3 and the teachers with the books and training they need to educate the children. This project will provide books for approximately 12,500 children. We invite all clubs to participate in this worthy project.

EDUCATIONAL CHALLENGES

• No formal reading training programs exist.

• Children begin school with multiple languages (Child's Mother Tongue) and books are only in English or Afrikaans.

• Books are poorly translated with generic stories and poor illustrations.

• Books have no relevance to South African Culture and Values.

• Children are disadvantaged from the onset.

SOLUTION

• South African Teachers have developed a “Literacy for all” program.

• The program consists of a series of identical books in all official languages so children can compare their language with the language the teacher is trying to teach.

• Books are provided from grades 1 through 3, cultural in nature and well illustrated.

• Winner of the South African Translators Institute Award.

• Books meet and exceed the Literacy Learning Program requirements as outlined in the National Curriculum.

• Pilot programs are already in place with results showing a 67% increase in literacy within 18 months.

Project ongoing. Management committee to evaluate schools that were identified for the program. Once results are received training of teachers will commence. Roll out will start in January 2009 after summer holidays.

<6-Apr-09> by Johan Spiues
Good day,
Bellville Rotary club experienced some difficulties in finding the right schools to roll out the program. The initial schools identified as previously disadvantaged schools were visited and evaluated. This was done to ensure that our money are well spent. As it turned out most of these schools are not managed very well. The Bellville Club than turned to the Western Cape Department of Education to help us find schools for the project. A meeting was held and 25 Principles of Schools attended. I am glad to announce that we managed to find suitable schools and that the project can now move forward again. We have placed our first order for books with the publishers. The teachers orientation on implimenting the "Literacy for All" program will take place after the Easter holidays when we will roll out the first phase. Will keep you posted
Johan

The project has been rolled out to 3 schools in the informal settlement of WALACEDENE,one school in Breede River, Robertson and another at the Protea Primary school in Nieuwoudsville. We have reached 1477 learners from grade 1 to grade 3. This program was rolled in out February 2009. A visit payed to the schools recently showed that grade 2 kids can read books of grade3 kids. A much surprised spin off was that the kids took the work books home and some of the parents/grant parents can now read some words and write their names! The schools are going to put together a concert for the Rotary club to show appreciation for what they have done to give hope to the future of these kids.

An error occured when I used the website MG number instead of the registered number with TRF. I corrected it by sending an email to all concerned, however it seems that there is still confusion about the project number. I submitted the final report again with the correct Match Grant number. The correct number for the LITERACY FOR ALL PROJECT, D9350 South Africa is MG 086624
Hope to receive a Closure Letter soon
