   South Africa - Umvoti area

Food Tunnels

$22,142

To provide food tunnels for food security and nutrition in the Umvoti Municipal Area.

Umvoti has an area of 2500 sq km and the vast bulk of the population live in harsh conditions in rural areas. Umvoti is also the centre of the AIDS pandemic in KwaZulu Natal. The problem:

1. Patients with AIDS are not strong enough to maintain a garden.

2. Patients with ARV's need nutrition to survive and care for their children.

3. Children need good food.

Pilot schemes at Muden and Cebelosizwe have shown that well managed tunnels can provide essential vegetables on a sustainable basis to soup kitchens (Mudan) and poor rural children (Cebelosizwe) and these are the models we propose.

The approximate usage of the tunnels is a follows:

1. A soup kitchen is normally planned to feed 25 families who are unable to feed themselves because the parents are terminally ill. Any excess vegetables go to the community.

2. A small village community will provide green leaves for possibly 200 poor children's families.

The erection of a tunnel is very quick and vegetables are normally produced six weeks after establishment.

Latest status is that 8 tunnels are in operation and another 5 are in the process. Far beyond our wildest dreams, the project has virtually become self sustaining.
The money remaining in the Grant will be used at the new Umvoti AIds Centre, where they are erecting a demonstration tunnel, also a specially designed "madala system"aimed at educating local growers about organic, homestead gardening techniques.Staff are being trained in perma culture techniques. The center will be opened in March next year.
Completion estimated March 2010
