This ROI and BPDAF supported Avoidable Blindness Project, exceptionally embraces wider health care solutions wholly funded by Rotarian interests in Mumbai.
As such it addresses our collective ambition to help ‘make blindness history’ in support of WHA, IAPB, RAGPB, Vision 2020 The Right to Sight and the goals of Vision 2020 (India), provided in the attachments. The Project also seeks to provide quality dental treatment, at charitable rates for low income residents from the Rotary Medical Centre in Mumbai. The Centre, run by the host Club of Mumbai Borivali East works on a not-for-profit basis.
Mumbai's suburbs lack poor / very basic infrastructure for the medical care of poorer people. Among Mumbai's major health problems, eye and dental problems abound. Private treatment for both these diseases are expensive and way out of the reach of many. Without treatment many will suffer deterioration of both sight and general health leading to loss of productive capability to learn and / or support their dependants.
A recent survey by the host Club of the area in Borivali along both sides of the Western Express Highway, found that the community living in this area consists of people from lower income groups. Many live in 'slum' accommodation. Most are workers are autorickshaw and taxi drivers, vegetable vendors, daily wage earners in small units in and around Mumbai. Low cost charitable medical centers are few and the host Club looks to address this through its Rotary medical centre.
The Rotary Medical Centre, has been operating for 2 years: Demand has been phenomenal. Over 30,000 people have benefited from its Rotary sponsored work. Hence the Rotary Club of Mumbai Borivali East seeks now to expand the scope of facilities to provide advanced eye care and dental facilities. The Rotary Medical Centre potentially benefits over 300,000 people living within its catchments.
In summary the project will:
a) Provide improved sight care / restoration, and general health care to low income residents, through its Rotary Medical Centre in Mumbai serving a population of not less than 300,000.
b) Help facilitate the local community to become more self-sufficient in early diagnosis of eye and other health-care conditions detectable through eye-examination.
Timescale: It is anticipated that the project will complete within 3 months of the formal start date.
