Esperanza Health Clinic Equip

$47,000

The Esperanza Health Center has been providing the health sevices to over 100,000 residents of the Colonia Nueva Aurora since it's completion in 1995. The center is directly adjacent to the Tijuana dump, an area of very low income families, many of whom sustain themselves by scavenging goods from the dump. The original Health Center is a 7000 sq ft modern facility built by grants and donations from Esperanza International, USA and El Organismo Social y Cultural de las Californias, a group of Tijuana Businessmen. The Center was outfitted with medical equipment through a TRF Matching Grant sponsored by the Rotary Club of Del Mar, CA. The Center has been deeded to and operated by and under the direction of Servants of St Margaret Mary and the Poor, a Guadalajara based Nursing Order who provide health care services to the poor in the Colonia. In recent years, the Health Center has been directing its efforts toward the much needed development of health maintenance and education to the community by developing a curriculum to train women of the community to become Promotoras qualified to go out into the community homes and schools to teach health maintenance, nutrician, sanitation and disease prevention. During this time, Esperanza has been able to construct an adjacent structure which is now nearing completion, to serve as a community center and training facility to accommodate the Promotoras training and outreach to training within the community.

The purpose of this Matching Grant request is to provide the audio visual equipment and materials to be utilized in the Promatora training programs as well as outfitting the kitchen equipment in support of the nutritional training program and the utilization of the faciilty as a Community Center.
