Project Description

Country: USA

Location: San Diego County

Total Budget: $9,621

Areas of Focus: Water, sanitation and hygiene, Maternal and child health, Basic education and literacy

Activity Type: Community Development: General

Summary: Shower/plumbing installation and a laptop computer for a women's resource center serving victims of sexual and human trafficking.

Alabaster Jar Project provides housing and resources for women who have survived human trafficking and sexual exploitation. AJP operates Grace House, a long-term residential facility. AJP also operates a drop-in Resource Center which serves an average of four hundred survivors a year providing peer support, food, clothing, toiletries, and hygiene items and connecting survivors to much needed resources such as housing and therapy. The AJP Resource Center provides weekly programs centered around healing from trauma and improving job and life skills for survivors of sexual exploitation and trafficking.

AJP originally operated its Center from a building on a church campus in Escondido. Due to the space needs of the property owner, AJP was required to relocate in March of 2022.The new space is a more cost-effective location and, in the long term, will prove to provide survivors with easier access, more parking, larger meeting spaces and better connection to other services. However, in the short-term, the space, a former classroom with only children's bathrooms, needs renovations and repairs to accommodate AJP's operational needs.

Often, survivors come to the Women's Resource Center directly after having slept in their car or on the streets and are therefore in need of a shower. An important tenant improvement required for the new facility is installation of a shower. This project includes updating the plumbing and electrical to accommodate the hot water heater.

This grant will fund installation of a shower, shower doors, required plumbing and electrical upgrade for the water heater. Material and labor costs total $8,185 and are comprised as follows:

-Shower kit $1,545

-Shower pan, walls, and plumbing renovations- $ 5,640

-Shower door installation- $1,000

Additionally, AJP needs new computer equipment. To participate in AJP programs and pursue other assistance opportunities (housing, employment), AJP has a limited number of laptop computers that survivors can use. The laptops that they have are obsolete and beginning to malfunction. Through this grant we seek to fund the purchase of one additional laptop, a desktop computer and a high capacity printer. Approximate Model and estimated costs are:

1. Intel ThinkPad E14 Gen 3 (14") Laptop- $1,137 (including tax)

2. Dell Inspiron 3891 Desk Top- $536 (including tax)

3. Brother HL-L6400DW Laser Printer- $513 including tax

The RSF Rotary club and its members have assisted AJP over the year and a half through the funding and installation of a vegetable and herb garden and meditation garden. RSF Rotarians are continuing to assist AJP with rotation of the herb and vegetable gardens between spring and winter. Additionally, RSF club members are planning a service project to assist AJB with weed and debris removal this fall.
