Project Description

Country: USA

Location: Greeley-Evans

Total Budget: $4,000

Area of Focus: Basic education and literacy

Activity Type: Education: General

Summary: The purpose is to support music education through the purchase of educational materials and instruments for elementary-aged children.

Project Description:

Dos Rios Elementary, a Greeley-Evans School District 6 International Baccalaureate school is seeking to infuse its music program with innovative educational materials and instruments for its students, aged 4-11. Dos Rios Elementary is a kindergarten-5th grade public school in northern Colorado, with an approximate enrollment of 500 students. The school and district are highly impacted by poverty, with 86% of students receiving free and reduced meals benefits at the school level and 72% of students at the district level. Content areas such as music are annually funded for supplies and equipment at the rate of $1.00 per student per year, which is not sufficient to keep pace with the needs of the program or students. This need has been exacerbated by the effects of Covid-19 and the inability of many music programs to perform with any instrument that required aspiration, such as singing, woodwind and brass instruments. These programs are still working to rebuild in the aftermath of the pandemic.

Describe the benefit to the community and/or improve lives:

This project will primarily support the area of focus of Rotary International of Education. Providing music education to K-5 students will increase music appreciation and understanding for underprivileged students. Our best hope is to spark a love for music and help young learners see how music can enhance and enlighten our lives and the lives of others.

Sustainability:

Members of our Greeley Centennial Rotary Club have a long-standing history and relationship with Greeley-Evans School District 6.

Active Rotarian Involvement:

The Greeley Centennial Rotary Club continues to be active in collaborating with Greeley-Evans School District 6 on various educational projects. Dos Rios Elementary is led by a long-term Rotarian.

Total Project Budget: $4,000.00

$4,000.00 from the Greeley Centennial Rotary and the 5440 District, consisting of $1,334.00 club dollars with matching funds of $2,666.00 from our district.

Publicity Plan:

Greeley Centennial Rotary will co-write an article as the project progresses updating our club membership, members of the Greeley-Evans School District 6 community, and District 5440. We will submit the article to the local newspapers in Greeley. Additionally, we will seek publication of the fund benefits through the Greeley-Evans School District 6. Twice annually, our World Community Service Committee reports to our club on project progress.
