Proposal Form

Machakos County, located south and southeast of Nairobi, Kenya. Kenya is a drought prone region and there are no local resources for clean water & sanitation. Children must walk many kilometers each day to fetch water before going to school. Girls during their menstrual periods for lack of sanitation do not attend school because there is no water available to wash themselves. Metuma Kamuthanga Village Water Committee and Parent/Teacher Association have selected 10 schools with the most dilapidated and unserviceable latrines and 10 schools with no water. The project will install at each of those schools a rainwater collection tank & 2 latrines/wash basin for girls and 2 latrines/wash basins for boys. Installation should take upwards of 1 year to complete the entire project.

Arrived in Kenya 6/26. Met with school head teachers at Metuma, Yakamete, Ngelani, Kyanda, Kamuthanga to discuss project, it's significance and long range impact on their students. Began construction of toilets. Met with vendor of toilets and tanks. Unable to load photos because of costs in doing so. Work progress is slow but steady. Met with some school classes to give education on handwashing. Met with Jenifer Mangu, Machakos Club Project Director and discussed with her the water project and its implementation.

June, 2012 a volunteer from San Diego traveled to Kenya, to distribute training materials to student regarding sanitation & use of hand-washing stations.

July, 2012 The El Cajon Sunset Rotarians & Machakos Rotary Club started the project. However, the project was stalled due to national elections & nation-wide teacher strikes preventing even the Machakos Rotary Club from continuing the project.

May, 2013 A team from San Diego traveled to Kenya to continue the project.

October 2013 A team from the El Cajon Sunset Club traveled to Kenya. Significant strides/progress was made in bringing project to completion. We anticipate project completion of the project by January 2014.

The Rotary Foundation indicates that a status report for this Global Grant was due on May 2,2013. That report is almost one year overdue. This late report impacts District 5340 ability to do additional Global Grants and the ability of the participating clubs to apply for additional grants in the future. It is imperative that this late report is completed and sent to The Rotary Foundation.
